About the Name Julian
Julian descends from the Latin Julianus, an adjective form derived from the Roman family name Julius — itself of uncertain pre-Roman origin, possibly traceable to the Greek Iulus (the name of Aeneas's son in Virgil's Aeneid) or to a Latin root meaning "young." The Julii were one of the most prominent patrician families of the late Roman Republic, producing Julius Caesar and his great-nephew Octavian (later the Emperor Augustus).
The name's Christian uptake came through several saints, most notably Saint Julian the Hospitaller (medieval legendary figure, patron saint of travelers and innkeepers) and Julian of Norwich (c. 1342–1416), the English Christian mystic whose Revelations of Divine Love is one of the earliest surviving books written in English by a woman. The name's checkered later reputation includes Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate (332–363), who attempted to reverse Constantine's Christianization of the empire, and 20th-century philosopher Julian Huxley.
Julian's American profile is unusual in that it has been steadily but never explosively popular for most of the past century, alternating between the US top 30 and top 50. The name's appeal is its layered classicism: Roman pedigree, Christian saints' lineage, soft consonants, three syllables that work in formal and informal registers. Modern bearers include musician Julian Lennon (son of John Lennon, namesake of the Beatles' "Hey Jude"), actor Julian Sands, and Argentine soccer star Julián Álvarez. Common nicknames are Jules (gender-neutral, vintage-trendy), Jule, and the rare Lian; international forms include Julián (Spanish), Julien (French), Giuliano (Italian), and Iulianus (the original Latin).
