About the Name Kenzie
Kenzie is the modern English short form of Mackenzie or Mckenzie (see separate entries for the Scottish Gaelic Mac Coinnich etymology meaning "son of Coinneach" — Coinneach being the Old Gaelic personal name from cain meaning "comely" or "fair"). Kenzie has been used as a casual diminutive of Mackenzie/Mckenzie in English-speaking countries since at least the late 20th century, transitioning from nickname to standalone first name in 21st-century American naming.
Notable contemporary bearers include American gymnast Kenzie Ziegler (Mackenzie Ziegler, born 2004, the American dancer and singer of Lifetime's Dance Moms); various American social media influencers; and contemporary actress Kenzie Schaaf.
Kenzie's American climb is recent: the name climbed from outside the US top 1000 in 2010 to the US top 300 girls' rank by 2018 and the top 300 since. The name has been used predominantly for girls. The name's appeal sits in three contemporary American naming preferences: the in-built Mackenzie-classical-Scottish pedigree, the popular two-syllable -zie ending family (Kenzie, Kinzie, Lizzie, Suzie), and the modern visual presence. Two firm syllables, soft consonants, and tonal warmth distinctive to vintage-revival-meets-modern names. The name reads as both classical-Scottish and contemporary American. Common nicknames are scarce since Kenzie is itself a nickname-shape — Ken (the dominant short form, casual and warm) and the rare Z each occasionally appear; the longer formal Mackenzie, Mckenzie, or Makenzie are sometimes used as Kenzie's official-document version. International forms include the original Scottish Gaelic Mac Coinnich.
