About the Name Andrea
Andrea is the Italian masculine form of Andrew, descending from the Greek Andreas ("manly" or "strong") — see separate entry on Andrew. The Italian Andrea is unusual in that, despite its -a ending (which signals feminine in most other European languages), it remains masculine in Italian — making it one of the most striking gender-coded discrepancies in European naming.
In English-speaking countries, however, Andrea has been adopted as a feminine form (similar to how Joshua/Joshie or Daniel/Daniela patterns work in other languages), and it is now predominantly female in American naming. The dual-gender nature of the name across languages produces interesting cultural-translation effects when Italian Andreas (men) come to America and find their name marked feminine.
Notable Italian bearers include Italian Renaissance painter Andrea del Sarto (1486–1531, one of the major Florentine painters of the High Renaissance), Italian sculptor Andrea Pisano, Italian operatic tenor Andrea Bocelli (born 1958, the blind Italian tenor whose career through the 1990s and 2000s anchored the masculine Italian register globally), and Italian fashion designer Andrea Pompilio. Notable English-speaking female bearers include Welsh-American singer Andrea Corr (of The Corrs), Greek-American figure-skater Andrea Joyce, and contemporary actress Andrea Riseborough. The American feminine Andrea climbed into the US top 50 girls' rank from 1972 through 2003. The name's appeal is its layered cross-linguistic register — Italian masculine pedigree, English-speaking feminine form, and three flowing syllables. Common nicknames Andie, Drea, and the rare Annie each carry distinct registers; international forms include Andrea (Italian masculine, identical spelling), the feminine Andreas (rare Greek), and the related Andrew family across European languages.
