About the Name Nathaniel
Nathaniel descends from the Hebrew Netan'el, composed of natan (given) and El (God) — "God has given" or "gift of God." The Hebrew name is etymologically related to but distinct from Nathan (which lacks the divine name element El). The biblical Nathanael appears in the Gospel of John (1:45–51) as one of Jesus's disciples — traditionally identified with the apostle Bartholomew (the dual-name pattern was common in Jewish naming tradition).
Despite the biblical anchor, Nathaniel was rare in pre-modern English-language naming until the Puritan-era Old Testament revival of the 17th century. The name found particular favor in Puritan New England and produced one of the most consequential American writers of the 19th century: Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864), author of The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, and Twice-Told Tales. Hawthorne's exploration of Puritan moral guilt in his ancestral New England gave the name a particularly American literary register.
Nathaniel held a US top-100 boys' rank from 1990 through 2010 and has held a top-150 range since. The name's appeal is its layered biblical pedigree combined with four flowing syllables that work in formal and casual registers. The name reads as dignified, slightly old-fashioned, and distinctly American (via Hawthorne). Common nicknames Nate (the dominant modern American form), Nat, Nath, and the rare Thaniel each carry distinct registers; the related but distinct Nathan is sometimes treated as a shorter alternative. International forms include Nataniele (Italian), Natanael (Spanish), Nathanaël (French), and the original Hebrew Netan'el.
