About the Name Abram
Abram descends from the Hebrew Avram, the original Hebrew form of Abraham (see separate entry on Abraham). The Hebrew name was changed by God to Avraham ("father of multitudes") in Genesis 17:5 — making the Abram/Avraham dual naming one of the foundational moments of the Hebrew Bible.
Notable bearers include US president Abraham Lincoln (using the longer formal Abraham, 1809–1865, the 16th US President 1861–1865, who led the United States through the Civil War and the abolition of slavery via the Emancipation Proclamation 1863 and the 13th Amendment 1865). Other notable bearers include American novelist Abram Tertz (the pen name of Andrei Sinyavsky, 1925–1997, the Russian dissident); American basketball player Abram Salzman; and the contemporary fictional Abram of various contemporary novels.
The two related spellings (Abram and Abraham) are tracked separately by SSA. Abram has been continuously used in Jewish-American and Christian-American naming for over a century. The name's American climb is part of the broader 21st-century return to Old Testament boys' names alongside Ezra, Asher, Isaiah, and Solomon. The name climbed from outside the US top 1000 in 2010 to the US top 300 boys' rank by 2018 and the top 300 since. The name's appeal sits in three contemporary American naming preferences: the layered Hebrew-Old Testament-foundational-religious pedigree, the in-built distinctive original-form-of-Abraham religious anchor, and the popular two-syllable -am ending. Two firm syllables, soft consonants, and tonal warmth distinctive to Hebrew-derived naming. The name reads as both classical-biblical and contemporary American. Common nicknames Abe (the dominant warm short form, casual and warm), Abie, Bram (back-end shortening, also a popular standalone name), and the rare Avro each carry distinct registers; the alternate spellings Abram, Abraham, Avram, Avrom, and Avraham have their own SSA tracking. International forms include Avram (Hebrew alternate), Avraham (Hebrew original), Abramo (Italian), Abrahão (Portuguese), and the original Hebrew Avram.
