About the Name Titus
Titus descends from the Latin Titus, of uncertain etymology — possibly connected to the Sabine word titia (defender) or the Latin tueri (to protect). The name was widely used in Roman antiquity and is the praenomen (first name) of multiple Roman historical figures.
Notable historical bearers include Roman emperor Titus (Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, 39–81 CE, the second emperor of the Flavian dynasty who completed the Roman Colosseum and ruled during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius); the New Testament's Titus (a Christian church leader and recipient of the Pauline Epistle to Titus, traditionally identified as the first bishop of Crete); and contemporary American actor Titus Burgess (American actor of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt).
Titus's American climb is recent: the name climbed from outside the US top 1000 in 2000 to the US top 200 boys' rank by 2018 and the top 200 since. The name has been driven partly by African-American naming and partly by the broader American return to short, classical Roman boys' names alongside Atlas, Cassius, and Otto. The name's appeal sits in three contemporary American naming preferences: the Roman-imperial-biblical layered pedigree, the compact two-syllable structure with the distinctive T-T-S consonant rhythm, and the in-built imperial-historical sophistication. Common nicknames Ty (the dominant short form, casual and warm — also a popular standalone name on its own) and the rare Tito each carry distinct registers; international forms include Tito (Italian/Spanish), Tite (French), and the original Latin Titus.
