About the Name Zachariah
Zachariah descends from the Hebrew Zekharyah meaning "Yahweh has remembered" or "Jehovah has remembered" (see separate entry on Zachary for the related Greek-derived form). The biblical Zechariah is one of the twelve minor prophets of the Old Testament and the title author of the Book of Zechariah, written c. 520 BCE during the post-Babylonian-Exile period.
The name has additional New Testament anchors through Zechariah, the priest-husband of Elizabeth and father of John the Baptist (Luke 1:5–80) — the priest who, according to Luke's Gospel, was struck mute when he doubted the angel Gabriel's announcement of his son's birth. Notable bearers include American basketball player Zachariah Williams; the contemporary fictional Zachariah of various contemporary novels.
The various spellings (Zachariah, Zachary, Zechariah, Zakariyya) are tracked separately by SSA. Zachariah has been continuously used in American Christian naming for over a century, particularly common in Mormon-American and African-American naming. The name's American climb is recent: the name climbed from outside the US top 1000 in 2000 to the US top 300 boys' rank by 2018 and the top 300 since. The name's appeal sits in three contemporary American naming preferences: the layered Hebrew-Old Testament-prophetic-religious pedigree, the in-built distinctive God-remembers etymological register, and the popular four-syllable structure that nicknames easily. Four flowing syllables, soft consonants, and tonal warmth distinctive to Hebrew-derived naming. The name reads as both classical-biblical and contemporary American. Common nicknames Zach (the dominant warm short form, casual and warm — also a popular standalone name on its own), Zacky, Zac, Ari (back-end shortening, a popular standalone name), and the rare Riah each carry distinct registers; the alternate spellings Zachariah, Zechariah, Zachary, Zakaria, and Zakariyya (Arabic) have their own SSA tracking. International forms include Zacarías (Spanish, with accent), Zaccaria (Italian), Sakariya (Turkish), Zakariyya (Arabic), and the original Hebrew Zekharyah.
