About the Name Austin
Austin is the medieval English contracted form of Augustine, descending through Latin Augustinus from Augustus, the imperial Roman name meaning "venerable," "revered," or "majestic." The contraction Austin appears in medieval English records continuously from the 12th century, both as a personal name and as a surname. Austin and Augustine were used interchangeably in medieval English legal and ecclesiastical documents.
The name's medieval Christian anchor is Saint Augustine of Canterbury (d. 604), the Italian Benedictine monk sent by Pope Gregory the Great to the British Isles to lead the Gregorian Mission for the conversion of the pagan Anglo-Saxons; he became the first Archbishop of Canterbury. (Distinct from Saint Augustine of Hippo, the much earlier 4th-5th century African theologian.) The Texas state capital Austin takes its name from Stephen F. Austin (1793–1836), the American empresario who is sometimes called the "Father of Texas" for his early American settlement of the region.
Austin's American climb peaked in the late 1990s, reaching the US top 10 boys' rank from 1995 through 1999 — making it one of the dominant American boys' names of that decade. The name has receded since but remains in steady use. The appeal is its dignified medieval Christian classicism combined with two firm syllables that read as both vintage and modern. Common nicknames Aus and the rare Tin occasionally appear; the longer formal version Augustine remains in use, particularly for those who want the full ecclesiastical register. International forms include Agustín (Spanish), Augustin (French), Agostino (Italian), Augusto (Portuguese/Spanish), and the original Augustinus (Latin).
