About the Name Carson
Carson is a Scottish surname meaning "son of Carr" or "son of Cars" — depending on which medieval root one accepts. The most credible Scottish-Gaelic line connects Carson to càrr (rough, rocky ground) plus the patronymic -son, yielding "son of someone from rocky terrain." An alternative reading derives Carson from Old French charrette (cart), making it functionally similar to Carter. Carson appears in Scottish and English records continuously since at least the 13th century.
The name's most influential American bearer is American frontiersman Christopher "Kit" Carson (1809–1868), the legendary mountain man, scout, and Indian agent whose career across the American West — explorer, fur trapper, soldier, sheep rancher — gave the surname an iconic American-frontier register. Kit Carson's name is preserved in geographical features across the western United States: Carson City, Nevada (state capital); Carson River; Carson Pass in California; and many others. Modern bearers include American television host Johnny Carson (using Carson as a surname, but his three-decade run as host of The Tonight Show made the surname an icon of American mid-late 20th century broadcasting).
Carson's transition to first name in American naming accelerated through the 1990s, riding the broader surname-as-given-name trend. The name climbed into the US top 100 boys' rank by 2000 and the top 80 by 2010. The appeal is its layered Americana — Scottish heritage, frontier register, two firm syllables, hard consonants, and tonal versatility from rural-rugged to upwardly-mobile-professional. The name has been used increasingly for girls as well. Common nicknames Cars, Carse, and the rare C-Son each carry distinct registers. There are no significant international variants since the name's first-name use is essentially American.
