About the Name Ali
Ali descends from the Arabic 'Alī meaning "high" or "elevated" — referring originally to the Islamic religious title and to the personal name of Ali ibn Abi Talib (601–661 CE), the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, the fourth Sunni caliph and the first Shia imam. Ali is one of the most-iconic names in Islamic history and is widely revered across both Sunni and Shia traditions.
Notable bearers include American boxer Muhammad Ali (Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., 1942–2016, the iconic American three-time heavyweight champion whose conversion to Islam in 1964 made his adopted name Ali one of the most-recognizable American names of the 20th century); Pakistani-American writer Ali Smith; and the contemporary American actor Ali Larter.
Ali has been continuously used across Muslim-American and broader American naming for decades. The name climbed from outside the US top 500 in 1995 to the US top 200 boys' rank by 2014 and the top 200 since. The name is also occasionally used for girls (often as a short form of Alicia or Alyssa), but the predominant American usage is masculine. The name's appeal sits in three contemporary American naming preferences: the Islamic-historical-religious pedigree, the compact two-syllable structure with the distinctive A-L consonant rhythm, and the strong Muhammad Ali cultural anchor. The name reads as both classical-religious and contemporary American. Common nicknames are scarce since the name is already short — the rare Ali-bear occasionally appears. International forms include Aly (alternate Western spelling), Ali (essentially identical across Arabic-speaking countries), and the broader Ali/Aly/Alia family.
