Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto was a Finnish architect, designer, sculptor and painter.

Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto was a Finnish architect and designer whose buildings, furniture, and glassware shaped modern Nordic design. Born in Kuortane in 1898 and raised in Jyvaskyla, he studied architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology and opened his own practice in 1923.

His Paimio Sanatorium, completed in 1933 for tuberculosis patients in southwestern Finland, brought him international attention. The building integrated functional planning with humane detail, including the cantilevered Paimio chair he designed for patient use. The Viipuri Library, finished in 1935 with its undulating wood ceiling and round skylights, further established his reputation.

In 1935 Aalto and his first wife Aino Marsio-Aalto co-founded the design company Artek with art collectors Maire and Harry Gullichsen. Artek manufactured his bent-plywood furniture, including the three-legged Stool 60, and remains in production. His 1936 Savoy vase, an undulating glass form created for Iittala, became one of the most recognized pieces of twentieth-century glassware.

Major postwar commissions included the Baker House dormitory at MIT, Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, and the Vuoksenniska church at Imatra. He served as president of the Finnish Association of Architects and received the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1957 and the AIA Gold Medal in 1963. He died in Helsinki in 1976.

The name Alvar is a Scandinavian given name of Old Norse origin, derived from elements meaning elf and warrior. He carried it through a body of work that joined modernism with Finnish materials.
