Annual data report
Top Baby Names of 2025
Official US rankings, real birth counts, the difference between rank momentum and added births, and the names that led each state in 2025.
Source: Social Security Administration data released in May 2026 · names with fewer than five births in a sex/year are suppressed · spellings are counted separately.
The 2025 top 10
The birth count is the strongest way to read the table: rank shows order, while count shows the distance between neighboring names. Open a name to see its full trajectory rather than judging a one-year position in isolation.
Fastest year-over-year risers inside the 2025 top 200
This comparison only includes spellings present in both 2024 and 2025. Rank gain is useful for spotting movement, but the birth-count columns show its scale. A large jump can reflect real momentum, a spelling shift, or the volatility of a smaller base; it is a prompt for investigation, not a forecast.

Which names added the most actual births?
Rank is ordinal: moving from #400 to #250 can take fewer added births than moving from #40 to #25. These tables sort by the year-over-year change in recorded births among names that finished inside the 2025 top 200, giving parents a second way to judge momentum.
Girls
Why both measures matter: a rank jump answers “how many competitors did this spelling pass?” while birth gain answers “how many more babies received this spelling?” Neither alone predicts what parents will choose next year.
Largest falls among names still inside the top 200
A decline of several places does not make a name unusable or suddenly rare. This table is most useful for separating names that are still highly familiar from names whose peak may have passed.
New or returning to the top 100
Names approaching the top 100
These names finished from #101 to #150 after rising year over year. This is a practical watchlist for parents who want a familiar name that is not yet in the national top 100. It is a threshold view, not a prediction.

The 2025 map: which names led the most states?
National rank can hide local context. The 51 state-and-DC files show where the national leaders dominated and where a different name reached #1. Each state link opens its complete 2025 top 20, movers, distinctive names, and historical comparison.
State #1 names outside the national top 10
These exceptions are the most useful reminder that a national list is not a local forecast. A missing national rank below means that the spelling is not part of 9BabyNames' exact-spelling reference subset; the state result still comes directly from the complete SSA state file.
| State | #1 name | List | National context | State births |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hawaii | Isla | Girls | Outside reference-name subset | 40 |
| Maryland | Ailany | Girls | Outside reference-name subset | 225 |
| South Dakota | Lainey | Girls | #30 nationally | 50 |
| Wyoming | Aurora | Girls | #15 nationally | 20 |
| Alabama | John | Boys | #23 nationally | 343 |
| West Virginia | Waylon | Boys | #56 nationally | 115 |
The 2024 state dataset is incomplete, so this report does not substitute an older year or claim a year-over-year change count.

How to use this report
Start with birth count when you care about how common a name actually was, then use How Common Is a Popular Baby Name? to translate representative ranks into per-birth frequency and transparent peer-group baselines. Use rank movement to spot rapidly changing spellings and check the state section when local repetition matters more than the national list. If exact ranks feel narrower than the name sound families hear, continue to Same Sound, Different Rank. Then use the name comparison tool for a side-by-side history or an individual name page for meaning and pronunciation.
Sources and scope: US Social Security Administration national baby-name data and 2025 state data. The national movement tables are limited to exact spellings present in the 9BabyNames reference database; official SSA ranks are preserved. State tables use the complete imported state files, and the change panel compares the adjacent 2024 and 2025 releases only when both years have all 51 jurisdictions and 102 state-and-list winners. It never silently substitutes an older year. SSA suppresses any state/year/sex/name combination with fewer than five recorded births.
