Benny Hinn
Religious Leader — born 1952
Benny Hinn is a televangelist who initiated the faith healing summit called Miracle Crusades.
Benny Hinn is an Israeli-American Pentecostal Christian televangelist, faith-healer, and author whose four-decade career has produced multiple defining American Pentecostal-Christian televangelism roles — particularly his 1989–2009 lead-host role on the daily TV-program This Is Your Day (which produced his late-1980s, 1990s, and 2000s American Pentecostal-Christian-television public profile). He was born Toufik Benedictus Hinn on December 3, 1952, in Jaffa, Israel, into a Greek-Orthodox-Lebanese-Armenian-Israeli-Palestinian family. His father Costandi Hinn was a Lebanese-Greek-Orthodox-immigrant Jaffa-area mayor under the British Mandate, and his mother Clemence Hinn was a homemaker.
The 1968 family emigration to Toronto, Ontario, Canada (when Benny was 15) launched his early-career path. His February 1972 conversion experience to Pentecostal Christianity at a Toronto-area public high school chapel meeting (at age 19) produced his early-1970s Canadian Pentecostal-Christian public profile.
His 1973 first Toronto-area faith-healing-evangelism engagements and his subsequent 1979 first commercial book The Anointing (which sold over one million American copies) launched his early-career American Pentecostal-Christian-evangelism public profile. His 1983 founding of the Orlando Christian Center (later renamed the World Outreach Church) in Orlando, Florida launched his 1980s American Pentecostal-Christian-televangelism public profile.
His September 1989 first-broadcast launch of his daily TV-program This Is Your Day (initially syndicated across multiple American Christian-TV networks, and subsequently broadcast on the Trinity Broadcasting Network) launched his late-1980s and 1990s American Pentecostal-Christian televangelism public profile. The This Is Your Day TV-program ran for approximately 20 years across 1989–2009 and produced his American Pentecostal-Christian-televangelism public profile.
His later biographical narrative across the 2000s and 2010s has been complicated by multiple American Pentecostal-Christian theological-and-financial controversies — particularly the 2007 U.S. Senate investigation of his Hinn Ministries' tax-exempt status (under Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley's investigation of multiple American Pentecostal-Christian televangelism organizations) and the September 2010 disclosed romantic relationship with American televangelist Paula White (which preceded his subsequent 2013 reconciliation with his estranged wife Suzanne Harthern, whom he had previously married in 1979). The Hinn-Harthern couple has four children.
His name Benny is the English short form of Benjamin (from the Hebrew Binyamin meaning "son of the right hand"). Benny has been a popular American boys' name across the mid-20th century.
