Brett Favre

Football Player — born 1969

Brett Favre is a former American football quarterback who holds the NFL records in career passing yards and touchdowns.

Brett Favre is an American former professional football player whose 20-season NFL career — primarily with the Green Bay Packers (1992–2007) — produced one of the American football quarterback careers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He was born Brett Lorenzo Favre on October 10, 1969, in Gulfport, Mississippi. His father Irvin Favre was an high-school football and baseball coach. He played college football at the University of Southern Mississippi and was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft.

His February 1992 trade to the Green Bay Packers — for the equivalent of a 1992 first-round draft pick — launched his 16-season Green Bay Packers career. He took over as the Packers' starting quarterback on September 20, 1992, and started 297 consecutive regular-season games (a NFL record across 17 seasons that has not been surpassed). His Packers period produced the 1996 Super Bowl XXXI championship (over the New England Patriots, 35–21) — making him the Super Bowl XXXI winning quarterback.

His 1995, 1996, and 1997 NFL Most Valuable Player Awards — the only NFL quarterback to win three consecutive NFL MVP Awards — established him as one of the American NFL figures of the late 1990s. His career statistics included 71,838 career passing yards (the NFL record at the time of his retirement, since surpassed by Drew Brees and Tom Brady) and 508 career passing touchdowns (also an NFL record at retirement, since surpassed).

His 2008 March retirement-and-unretirement (substantially complicated by his continuous public-and-team disagreements with the Packers organization) led to his August 2008 trade to the New York Jets, his 2009 trade to the Minnesota Vikings, and his 2010 final retirement at age 41. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016. His post-retirement career has been complicated by the 2020s Mississippi welfare-fund scandal — in which he was named in multiple civil suits over allegedly diverted Mississippi Department of Human Services welfare funds. He has been married to Deanna Tynes Favre since 1996, and the couple has two children.

His name Brett is from the Old French Bret meaning "a Breton" — referring to people from Brittany, France. Brett has been continuously among the most-popular American boys' names for decades.
