Buddy Guy
Guitarist — born 1936
Buddy Guy is a legendary blues guitarist and singer who have given the genre of music a new meaning.
Buddy Guy is an American blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter whose seven-decade music career has produced multiple defining 20th-century American electric-blues recordings and continuous influence on subsequent rock-and-roll guitarists — particularly Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Jeff Beck. He was born George Guy on July 30, 1936, in Lettsworth, Louisiana, into a Louisiana-Black sharecropping family. His father Sam Guy was a Pointe Coupee Parish sharecropper and his mother Isabel Tinder Guy was a homemaker.
His Louisiana rural upbringing produced his teenage homemade-diddley-bow string-instrument self-instruction. His 1953 Baton Rouge professional-music career launch and his 1957 Chicago migration produced his late-1950s and early-1960s Chicago Chess Records career. His 1958 Chicago South Side blues-club arrival — with $1.50 in his pocket — and his late-1958 Theresa's Lounge encounter with Muddy Waters launched his subsequent Chicago career.
His 1958–1968 Chess Records career produced his 1958 single "This Is the End" and his subsequent collaborations as session guitarist for Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson II, and Koko Taylor recordings across the early-1960s Chess Records peak. His 1968–1985 Vanguard Records and Junior Wells partnership produced multiple defining 1960s and 1970s American electric-blues recordings — particularly the 1972 Junior Wells–Buddy Guy duo album Buddy and the Juniors.
His 1991 Silvertone Records signing — and his 1991 album Damn Right, I've Got the Blues (which won the 1991 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album) — produced his 1990s American mainstream blues recognition. The 1989 founding of his Chicago blues-club Buddy Guy's Legends — and his subsequent multiple blues-and-rock-and-roll Hall of Fame inductions (2005 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; 1985 Blues Hall of Fame) — produced his later American blues recognition. His later 21st-century career has produced his 2018 album The Blues Is Alive and Well (which won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album).
His name Buddy began as a childhood nickname (a common English diminutive). Buddy was a popular American boys' name through the mid-20th century.
