Chantal Kreviazuk

Pop Singer — born 1974

Chantal Kreviazuk is a singer-songwriter of adult contemporary music, and classical pianist from Canada.

Chantal Kreviazuk is a Canadian singer-songwriter and pianist whose late-1990s and 2000s adult-contemporary pop output produced one of the more recognizable Canadian female-vocalist profiles of her generation. She was born Chantal Jennifer Kreviazuk on May 18, 1974, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, into a Ukrainian-Canadian family. Her parents Carol and Peter Kreviazuk raised her in the St. Boniface Roman Catholic French-speaking community of Winnipeg.

She began classical piano lessons at age three and trained at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her teenage performance circuit across Winnipeg coffeehouses and her late-1980s and early-1990s songwriting work produced her early-career profile.

Her 1996 signing to Columbia Records and her 1996 debut album Under These Rocks and Stones — featuring the singles Surrounded and God Made Me — produced her late-1990s Canadian adult-contemporary public profile. Her 1999 follow-up Colour Moving and Still and its 2002 successor What If It All Means Something extended her Canadian commercial reach across the early 2000s.

Her 2001 contribution of Time of Our Lives to the Dawson's Creek soundtrack and her songwriting collaborations with Avril Lavigne, Drake, Carrie Underwood, and Kelly Clarkson across the 2000s and 2010s extended her public profile beyond her own recordings. She married Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida in 1999, and the couple has three sons. Her 2009 album Plain Jane and her continued songwriting output through the 2010s and 2020s sustained her ongoing recording career.

Her name Chantal derives from the Old French cantal (meaning stone or boulder), originally a French surname taken from the Saint Jeanne de Chantal of 17th-century France. Chantal has been a popular French-Canadian girls' name across the late 20th century.
