Chuck Jones

Chuck Jones was a famous animator and cartoon artist who also wrote, produced and directed famous animation films.

Charles Martin "Chuck" Jones was an American animator, cartoon director, screenwriter, and producer whose work at Warner Bros. helped define the visual language and comic timing of twentieth-century theatrical animation. Across more than six decades he directed shorts featuring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Pepé Le Pew, and the pairing of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner.

Jones was born on September 21, 1912, in Spokane, Washington, and grew up in Los Angeles after his family moved south during his early childhood. His father's frequent business failures left stacks of unused stationery in the house, which the Jones children filled with drawings. He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute and took early jobs washing animation cels at the Ub Iwerks studio.

He joined the Leon Schlesinger studio, which became Warner Bros. Cartoons, in the mid-1930s and was promoted to director in 1938. From the 1940s onward he developed many of the studio's most enduring characters, directing Duck Amuck (1953), One Froggy Evening (1955), and What's Opera, Doc? (1957), each later selected for the United States National Film Registry.

After Warner Bros. closed its animation unit, Jones produced and directed the 1966 television special How the Grinch Stole Christmas! with Dr. Seuss and the 1970 feature The Phantom Tollbooth. He received an Honorary Academy Award in 1996 and continued drawing and writing into his final years. He died on February 22, 2002, in Corona del Mar, California, at the age of 89.

His name Chuck derives from the English short form of Charles, itself from Germanic Karl meaning "free man." Chuck has been used as an independent given name in the United States since the early twentieth century.
