Clive Owen
Movie Actor — born 1964
Clive Owen is an English theater, television and cinema actor.
Clive Owen is an English actor whose three-decade career has produced multiple defining American and British film and TV roles — particularly his 2004 Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination for Closer and his 1990–1996 lead role on the British TV series Chancer. He was born Clive Owen on October 3, 1964, in Coventry, Warwickshire, England, into a working-class English family. His father Jess Owen was a country-and-western singer who left the family when Clive was three, and his mother Pamela Cotton subsequently raised five sons as a single mother.
His education at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London (graduated 1987) launched his late-1980s and early-1990s English Royal Shakespeare Company stage career — including 1988 RSC seasons at Stratford-upon-Avon. His breakthrough came in 1990 with his lead role as Stephen Crane on the four-season ITV business-drama TV series Chancer (1990–1991), followed by his 1991 indie-film breakthrough in Stephen Poliakoff's Close My Eyes.
His 1998 lead role as Nick Lewis in Mike Hodges's Croupier — the London-casino drama that became a 2000 American sleeper hit — launched his American film career. His 2004 supporting role as Larry in Mike Nichols's Closer (the Patrick Marber stage-play adaptation opposite Julia Roberts, Jude Law, and Natalie Portman) won him the 2005 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor and the 2005 Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination.
His subsequent film career has produced Sin City (2005, the Frank Miller graphic-novel adaptation), Children of Men (2006, the Alfonso Cuarón dystopian science-fiction film), Inside Man (2006, the Spike Lee bank-heist drama opposite Denzel Washington), The International (2009), Hemingway & Gellhorn (2012, opposite Nicole Kidman), and Anon (2018). His 2017 lead role as Bill Clinton in FX's Impeachment: American Crime Story (2021) produced his 2020s American TV career direction. He married actress Sarah-Jane Fenton in 1995 and the couple has two daughters.
His name Clive derives from the Old English place-name meaning "cliff" or "slope." Clive has been a steady English boys' name since the 19th century.
