Constantin Brâncuși

Constantin Brâncuși was a Romanian sculptor, painter and photographer.

Constantin Brâncuși was a Romanian-born sculptor who worked principally in France and is regarded as a pioneer of modernist sculpture. By stripping away naturalistic detail to reveal essential form, he reshaped the language of three-dimensional art and influenced generations of sculptors across Europe and the United States.

Brâncuși was born on February 19, 1876, in the village of Hobița in Gorj County, Romania, the son of peasant farmers Nicolae and Maria Brâncuși. He left home at a young age, working in various trades before enrolling at the School of Crafts in Craiova in 1894 and then at the National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest from 1898 to 1902.

In 1904 he travelled to Paris, much of the journey on foot, and entered the École des Beaux-Arts. He briefly worked in Auguste Rodin's studio in 1907 but left, reportedly remarking that nothing grew in the shade of large trees. From around 1907 he began his characteristic simplified forms, including The Kiss, the various versions of Sleeping Muse, and the polished bronze series Bird in Space.

His commissioned monumental ensemble at Târgu Jiu, including the Endless Column, was completed in 1938. A 1927 customs case in New York, in which a Bird in Space was initially classified as a manufactured metal object rather than as art, helped expand the legal definition of sculpture in the United States. He took French citizenship in 1952 and died in Paris on March 16, 1957, aged 81.

His name Constantin derives from the Latin Constantinus, from constans meaning "steadfast." Constantin has been borne by Roman emperors and remains common in Romanian, Greek, and other Eastern European traditions.
