Danny DeVito

Movie Actor — born 1944

Danny DeVito is an American actor, comedian, director and producer, who is more famously known for his portrayal of taxi dispatcher ‘Louie De Palma’ in the series ‘Taxi’.

Danny DeVito is an American actor, director, producer, and comedian whose six-decade career has produced multiple defining American film and TV roles — particularly his 1978–1983 lead role as Louie De Palma on ABC's sitcom TV series Taxi (for which he won the 1981 Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and the 1981 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series). He was born Daniel Michael DeVito Jr. on November 17, 1944, in Neptune Township, New Jersey, into an Italian-American working-class family. His father Daniel DeVito Sr. was a Neptune-area dry-cleaning-business and small-business owner, and his mother Julia DeVito was a homemaker.

His education at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City (1966) launched his early-career path. His 1966 first New York Off-Broadway debut and his subsequent 1969–1973 New York Off-Broadway theater career — particularly his 1971 Off-Broadway production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (in which he played hospital-patient Martini, a role he reprised in the 1975 Miloš Forman film adaptation) — launched his early-career American theater public profile.

His September 12, 1978 first-broadcast appearance as Sunshine Cab Company dispatcher Louie De Palma on ABC's Taxi launched his late-1970s and 1980s American TV-comedy public profile. The Taxi series ran for 114 episodes across five seasons (1978–1983) and produced his 1981 Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

His subsequent feature-film career has produced multiple defining American films — particularly Robert Zemeckis's Romancing the Stone (1984, opposite Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner), Jonathan Lynn's The Ratings Game (1984, his directorial debut), Penny Marshall's Big (1988), Tim Burton's Batman Returns (1992, in which he played the Penguin opposite Michael Keaton's Batman), Barry Sonnenfeld's Get Shorty (1995, which he produced), and Curtis Hanson's L.A. Confidential (1997). His 2006–2019 recurring role as Frank Reynolds on FXX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia produced his later American TV-comedy public profile. He married American actress Rhea Perlman in 1982 (separated 2017, although they reconciled in 2019). They have three children.

His name Danny is the English diminutive of Daniel (from the Hebrew Daniyyel meaning "God is my judge"). Danny was the most-popular American boys' name through the mid-20th century.
