Eddie Murphy
Movie Actor — born 1961
Eddie Murphy is an American comedian and actor, known for his witty sense of humor and inspiring characters.
Eddie Murphy is an American actor, comedian, and producer whose four-decade career has produced multiple American comedy films, plus his three-season tenure on NBC's Saturday Night Live (1980–1984). He was born Edward Regan Murphy on April 3, 1961, in Brooklyn, New York City. His parents separated when he was three, and his father (a transit-police officer) died when he was six. He was raised primarily by his mother and his stepfather Vernon Lynch in Roosevelt, New York.
His break came in 1980 at age 19 when he was hired as a featured player on NBC's Saturday Night Live — saving the show during its disastrous fifth season (the post-original-cast season that had been failing in ratings). Murphy was promoted to full cast member for the 1981–1982 season and anchored the show for the next three seasons through 1984. His recurring SNL characters — including Mr. Robinson (the deadpan urban-Mr. Rogers parody), Buckwheat (the Little Rascals parody), and Velvet Jones (the pimp-turned-author) — established him as one of the American sketch-comedy performers of the early 1980s.
His 1982 film breakthrough came with Walter Hill's 48 Hrs. (opposite Nick Nolte) — the interracial buddy-cop comedy that became one of the American comedy films of 1982. The 1984 follow-up Beverly Hills Cop (opposite Judge Reinhold and Lisa Eilbacher) became one of the highest-grossing films of 1984. The Beverly Hills Cop franchise produced three sequels (1987, 1994, and the 2024 Netflix sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F).
His subsequent comedy peaks included Coming to America (1988, the John Landis comedy) and its 2021 sequel, the Eddie Murphy Raw (1987, the stand-up comedy concert film), the Nutty Professor films (1996, 2000), the Dr. Dolittle films (1998, 2001), and the Donkey voice-role across all four Shrek films (2001, 2004, 2007, 2010). His 2007 Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nomination for Bill Condon's Dreamgirls (2006) — in which he played singer-songwriter James "Thunder" Early — was celebrated by American film critics. He has been with Australian model Paige Butcher since 2012, and the couple has two children.
His name Eddie is the English short form of Edward (from the Old English Eadweard meaning "wealthy guardian"). Eddie has been continuously among the most-popular American boys' names for over a century.
