Edgard Varese

Edgard Varese was a famous French-born composer who coined the phrase “organized sound” to describe his style of music.

Edgard Varèse (1883–1965) was a French-American composer who pushed Western music toward sound itself, treating timbre, density, and rhythm as primary material rather than melody or traditional harmony. Born in Paris and trained at the Schola Cantorum and the Conservatoire, he emigrated to the United States in 1915 and settled in New York, where he co-founded the International Composers' Guild to champion new music.

His percussion ensemble piece Ionisation (1931) is among the first Western works scored entirely for unpitched percussion, calling for sirens, anvils, and a piano used as a struck resonator. Amériques, Hyperprism, and Arcana expanded the orchestra into a vehicle for blocks of sound, with sirens cutting across wind and brass writing.

Varèse spent decades searching for instruments that could generate the sonorities he imagined, an interest that bore fruit late in his life through magnetic tape. Déserts interleaves orchestral sections with electronic interpolations, and Poème électronique (1958), composed for the Philips Pavilion at the Brussels World's Fair, distributed processed sounds across hundreds of loudspeakers inside Le Corbusier's building.

Frank Zappa, Pierre Boulez, and several generations of electronic and percussion composers have cited him as a direct precedent. He destroyed or abandoned much early music, leaving a small but concentrated body of work that retained its strangeness through the twentieth century.

The given name Edgard is a French variant of Edgar, from the Old English Eadgar, combining ead, meaning prosperity or fortune, with gar, meaning spear. The surname Varèse points to the Lombard city of the same name, reflecting his paternal Italian ancestry. He carried both a French civic identity and an Italian family line through his career.
