Edvard Munch

Painter — born 1863

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter whose works greatly influenced German Expressionism.

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian Symbolist painter and printmaker whose 60-year artistic career produced one of the foundational bodies of work in late-19th and early-20th-century European Symbolist and Expressionist painting — particularly his 1893 painting The Scream. He was born Edvard Munch on December 12, 1863, in Løten, Norway, into a Norwegian middle-class family. His father Christian Munch was a Norwegian military doctor and his mother Laura Catharine Bjølstad was a homemaker. The 1868 death of his mother from tuberculosis (when Munch was five) and the 1877 death of his elder sister Sophie from tuberculosis (when Munch was 14) produced his subsequent preoccupation with sickness, death, anxiety, and emotional despair.

His education at the Royal School of Drawing (1881–1882) and the Royal School of Art and Design (1882–1885) in Christiania (modern Oslo) launched his early-career Norwegian Naturalist painting. His 1885 first Paris visit — and his subsequent 1889–1892 multiple Paris and Berlin residencies — produced his transition from Norwegian Naturalism to the European Symbolist and Expressionist movements that would shape his 1890s painting peak.

His 1890–1892 The Frieze of Life series — a series of paintings exploring the cyclical themes of love, anxiety, sexual jealousy, and death — produced his international recognition. The series includes multiple defining late-19th-century European Symbolist paintings — particularly The Sick Child (1885–1886, the first of his six paintings of his deceased elder sister Sophie), Madonna (1894–1895), Vampire (1893–1894), The Dance of Life (1899–1900), and the 1893 painting The Scream (a series of four versions across 1893–1910).

His 1893 painting The Scream — depicting a screaming, anxiety-stricken figure on a fjord-side bridge under a swirling red-and-orange sky — has been continuously cited as one of the foundational images of 20th-century European Expressionist painting and one of the most-recognized paintings in 20th-century Western art history. The 1908 Copenhagen mental breakdown and his subsequent 1908–1909 Copenhagen sanatorium treatment shaped his subsequent later 1910s and 1920s Norway-based painting career. He died on January 23, 1944, at age 80, at his Ekely estate outside Oslo.

His name Edvard derives from the Old English root meaning "prosperous protector" — the Scandinavian and German variant of Edward. Edvard has been a rare but enduring boys' name across Scandinavian-tradition American naming.
