Emanuel Vidović

Emanuel Vidović was a Croatian painter and graphic artist.

Emanuel Vidović was a Croatian painter and graphic artist whose moody seascapes and shadowed church interiors made him one of the leading figures of Dalmatian modernism in the first half of the twentieth century. Born in Split in October 1870 into a family of modest means, he received his earliest drawing lessons from a local Italian instructor before winning a place at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, where he studied painting and engraving in the late 1880s.

From 1892 he lived for several years in Chioggia and other small towns in the Venetian lagoon, painting fishing boats, lamp-lit canals and the misty light off the Adriatic that would mark his palette for the rest of his life. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1897 and became a regular contributor to its later editions, drawing favourable notice from critics who placed his work alongside that of the Italian late-divisionists.

Returning to Split around 1898 he founded the so-called Trogir Group, painted at the small island town with younger Croatian artists, and produced the long series of tonal harbour scenes, sacristies and still lifes for which he is best known. His finest works include Trogir, Procession, the cycle of altar paintings titled Mrtva priroda, and the great late Interior of a Church.

He taught at the Real Gymnasium in Split, mentored an entire generation of Dalmatian painters, and saw the Galerija Emanuel Vidović opened in his honour after his death. He died in Split in June 1953 at the age of eighty-two.

The name Emanuel comes from the Hebrew Immanu'el, meaning God is with us, and is a male given name. He carried it through every shadowed nave he painted.
