Emile Habibi

Emile Habibi was a Palestinian writer and communist politician who is known for his insightful literary works.

Emile Habibi (1922–1996) was a Palestinian writer and politician who lived his entire life inside the borders of what became Israel and built one of the most original prose voices in modern Arabic literature. Born in Haifa under the British Mandate, he worked as a radio broadcaster before turning to political organizing among Arab citizens of the new Israeli state.

He was a founder of the Israeli Communist Party's Arab leadership and served three terms in the Knesset between 1952 and 1972. For decades he edited the Arabic-language Communist newspaper Al-Ittihad in Haifa, using its pages for political argument and for the serialized fiction that became his books.

His novel The Secret Life of Saeed: The Pessoptimist (1974) follows a hapless Palestinian collaborator-informant after 1948 through episodes that fuse Voltairean satire, Arab folk narrative, and modernist self-interruption. The compound title coinage joining pessimist and optimist became shorthand in Arabic letters for the condition of Palestinians inside Israel.

Later books including Ikhtayyeh and Saraya, the Ghoul's Daughter continued in the same register of memory, displacement, and dark comic voicing. He received the Al-Quds Prize from the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1990 and the Israel Prize in 1992, accepting both, and asked that his gravestone read simply "Emile Habibi — Remained in Haifa."

The given name Emile is the French form of Latin Aemilius, an old Roman family name of debated origin sometimes linked to a root meaning rival. The surname Habibi comes from the Arabic root ḥ-b-b, meaning to love, with the possessive ending so the word means "my beloved," common as a Levantine family name. He wrote in Arabic throughout his life.
