Etta James

Etta James was an American singer-songwriter whose six-decade career produced one of the American R&B-and-blues vocal bodies of work in 20th-century American popular music — particularly the 1961 song "At Last," which has been continuously cited as one of the American songs of the 20th century. She was born Jamesetta Hawkins on January 25, 1938, in Los Angeles, California, into financial poverty. Her mother Dorothy Hawkins was 14 at the time of her birth, and the identity of her father has been continuously debated (Etta herself believed her father was pool-hall hustler Rudolf "Minnesota Fats" Wanderone Jr.).

Her singing career began in her late teens. Her 1955 first single — the answer-song "The Wallflower (Dance with Me, Henry)" — was a R&B chart hit at age 17, but the song was overshadowed by the Georgia Gibbs cover version on the Mercury Records label. The 1955 chart competition shaped James's lifelong public statements about 1950s American R&B-music racial-segregation practices.

Her 1960 Chess Records signing produced her commercial breakthrough. The 1960 single "All I Could Do Was Cry" reached R&B chart #2. Her 1961 second album At Last! (Argo/Chess) and the title-track single "At Last" — based on the 1941 Glenn Miller jazz standard — established her as one of the American R&B-and-blues figures of the early 1960s. The "At Last" became continuously associated with American wedding ceremonies across subsequent decades.

Her career was shaped by her continuous heroin and cocaine addictions through the 1960s and 1970s — including multiple prison sentences and rehab stays. Her 1989 Grammy nomination for the Seven Year Itch album launched her late-career renaissance. The 2008 Beyoncé biopic Cadillac Records (in which Beyoncé played Etta James) anchored James in 21st-century American cultural memory. She died on January 20, 2012, at age 73, in Riverside, California.
