Eugen Suchoň

Eugen Suchoň was a Slovak composer and was one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century.

Eugen Suchoň (1908–1993) was a Slovak composer whose opera Krútňava stands as the founding work of the modern Slovak operatic repertoire. Born in Pezinok, near Bratislava, he studied composition at the Academy of Music and Drama in Bratislava under Frico Kafenda and then at the master school of the Prague Conservatory under Vítězslav Novák.

His early Serenade for wind quintet and the cantata Žalm zeme podkarpatskej (Psalm of the Sub-Carpathian Land) established a voice rooted in Slovak folk modality but engaged with central-European modernist harmony. He taught at the Bratislava Academy and at Comenius University in Bratislava for several decades, training many of the composers who followed him.

He worked on Krútňava (The Whirlpool) during the Slovak State and the early postwar years, completing it in 1949. The opera, set in a Slovak village and treating murder, conscience, and communal judgment, was performed widely across the Soviet bloc and translated into multiple languages, securing his standing as the founding figure of Slovak national opera.

His second opera, Svätopluk, dramatizes the ninth-century Great Moravian ruler. He continued to write orchestral works including the Symphonic Fantasy on B-A-C-H for organ, strings, and percussion, and he published influential theoretical writings on Slovak modal harmony. He died in Bratislava in 1993, months after Slovak independence.

The given name Eugen is the Central European form of Greek Eugenios, from eu, meaning well, and genēs, meaning born, so "well-born." The surname Suchoň is a Slovak family name; the háček on the final consonant marks the palatal sound. He used the Slovak spelling consistently in his published scores.
