Fernando Espuelas
Fernando Espuelas is a Latin American business tycoon and speaker, who is known for founding the pioneer internet company ‘Starmedia’.
Fernando Jose Espuelas was born in 1966 in Montevideo, Uruguay, and emigrated with his mother to Connecticut as a child during a period of political turbulence in his home country. He grew up speaking Spanish at home and English at school, an experience that later shaped his media work for U.S. Hispanic audiences.
He earned a bachelor's degree from Connecticut College in 1988 and began his career in advertising at Ogilvy & Mather, working on multinational accounts before moving to AT&T, where he handled Latin American marketing during the rapid growth of telecommunications across the region in the early 1990s.
In 1996 he co-founded StarMedia Network in New York with Jack Chen, building it into the first internet portal designed for Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking audiences in Latin America and the United States. The company went public on Nasdaq in May 1999 at the height of the dot-com boom and reached a peak market value above three billion dollars before the sector contraction sharply reduced its valuation.
He left StarMedia in 2001 and turned to broadcasting, hosting The Fernando Espuelas Show, a syndicated English-language radio program on U.S. Hispanic political and cultural issues, distributed through Univision America from 2010. He also wrote Life in Action (2007), a personal-development book drawing on his immigrant arc.
The name Fernando comes from the Germanic Ferdinand, combining frith meaning peace and nanth meaning bold, often read as brave traveler. He carried the name into U.S. boardrooms and broadcast booths, helping keep it visible to bilingual American parents choosing names that travel comfortably across English and Spanish.
