Fred Allen

Fred Allen was an American comedian whose absurdist topical humor made his weekly radio program one of the most-listened-to broadcasts in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s. He was born John Florence Sullivan on May 31, 1894, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Irish-American parents, and was raised by his aunt in nearby Allston after his mother's early death. He worked as a stack boy at the Boston Public Library while teaching himself juggling.

He performed in vaudeville from 1911 as a juggler and comic monologist under the names Fred St. James and then Freddy James, taking the stage name Fred Allen around 1918. He appeared in the Broadway revues The Passing Show of 1922, The Greenwich Village Follies, and Three's a Crowd (1930) before moving to network radio in 1932 with The Linit Bath Club Revue.

His weekly hour-long radio program — broadcast under various sponsor titles including Town Hall Tonight, The Texaco Star Theatre, and The Fred Allen Show — ran from 1932 to 1949 and featured his recurring sketch Allen's Alley, in which he interviewed the eccentric residents Senator Beauregard Claghorn, Mrs. Pansy Nussbaum, Titus Moody, and Ajax Cassidy. The long-running mock feud between Allen and the comedian Jack Benny, broadcast across both their radio shows, was among the most-loved running jokes of American radio's golden age.

His radio audience declined sharply after the rise of television in the late 1940s, and his 1950–1952 NBC quiz show Judge for Yourself was unsuccessful. He published two memoirs, Treadmill to Oblivion (1954) and the posthumous Much Ado About Me (1956), and died of a heart attack on a Manhattan street on March 17, 1956, at age 61.

His name Fred — his stage name rather than birth name — is the short form of Frederick, from the Germanic Frithuric, combining frithu meaning "peace" and ric meaning "ruler" or "power." He chose the surname Allen from the vaudeville manager Edgar Allen, who had given him early bookings.
