Frederick Buechner

Frederick Buechner is an eminent American theologian and writer.

Frederick Buechner was an American Presbyterian minister, novelist, and theologian whose books bridged literary fiction and Christian devotional writing across more than sixty years. Born in New York City in 1926, he lost his father to suicide at age ten, an event he would later treat as the central wound underlying his writing.

He graduated from Princeton University in 1948 and published his first novel, A Long Day's Dying, two years later to wide critical attention. After teaching English at Lawrenceville School, he experienced a religious conversion under the preaching of George Buttrick and entered Union Theological Seminary, where he studied under Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Tillich. He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1958.

Buechner served as school minister at Phillips Exeter Academy from 1958 to 1967 before withdrawing to Vermont to write full-time. His four-volume Bebb tetralogy beginning with Lion Country (1971) was nominated for a National Book Award, and Godric (1980), a meditation on a twelfth-century English hermit, was a Pulitzer finalist.

His autobiographical and theological works, including The Sacred Journey (1982), Telling the Truth (1977), and Wishful Thinking (1973), found audiences far outside denominational borders. He published more than thirty books before his death in Rupert, Vermont, in August 2022 at ninety-six.

The name Frederick is a masculine name of Germanic origin meaning "peaceful ruler," from the elements frid ("peace") and ric ("power"). The novelist preferred its diminutive Freddy within his family. The name carried cultural prestige across Anglo-Protestant America in the early twentieth century, fitting the genteel New York and New Jersey settings of his upbringing.
