Gottfried W. Leibniz

Gottfried W. Leibniz was a German mathematician and philosopher.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) was a German polymath whose contributions to mathematics, philosophy, logic, jurisprudence, and engineering placed him among the central figures of the early Enlightenment. Born in Leipzig to a family of scholars, he entered the local university at fourteen and earned a doctorate in law at twenty, refused only by his hometown faculty on grounds of his youth.

He spent most of his working life in the service of the House of Hanover, holding posts as librarian, court counselor, and historian to the dukes who would eventually inherit the British throne. The position gave him time to correspond with hundreds of scholars across Europe and to travel to Paris, London, and Vienna on diplomatic and intellectual errands.

In mathematics he developed the differential and integral calculus independently of Isaac Newton, publishing his notation, including the integral sign and the d for differentials, from 1684 onward. The bitter priority dispute that followed shaped European mathematics for a generation, though his notation became the standard now used worldwide. He also designed a stepped-drum mechanical calculator capable of multiplication and division.

His philosophical writings introduced the doctrine of monads, the principle of sufficient reason, and the much-debated thesis that ours is the best of all possible worlds, set out in the Theodicy (1710) and the posthumously published Monadology. Leibniz also pioneered binary arithmetic and laid groundwork for symbolic logic.

The given name Gottfried is German, formed from Old High German got, god, and fridu, peace, yielding the sense "peace of God." He bore it through a life spent seeking rational order in nature and society.
