Gunnar Myrdal

Gunnar Myrdal was a Swedish Nobel laureate economist, sociologist, and politician.

Gunnar Myrdal was a Swedish economist, sociologist, and politician whose work bridged academic theory and the design of welfare states. Born in 1898 in Gustafs parish, Dalarna, he trained in law and economics at Stockholm University and became part of the Stockholm School, the group that anticipated several Keynesian arguments about aggregate demand and government spending.

In 1938 the Carnegie Corporation invited Myrdal to direct a vast study of race relations in the United States. The result, published in 1944 as An American Dilemma: The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy, argued that segregation flatly contradicted the egalitarian creed Americans claimed for themselves, and the book was cited by the Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education a decade later.

He served as Sweden's Minister of Trade and Commerce from 1945 to 1947, then led the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe through the early postwar reconstruction. His three-volume Asian Drama: An Inquiry into the Poverty of Nations, released in 1968, examined why South and Southeast Asian economies were not closing the gap with the industrialised world, and argued that institutional softness mattered more than capital shortage.

In 1974 he shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Friedrich Hayek, an awkward pairing of opposites that he himself questioned. With his wife Alva Myrdal, herself a 1982 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, he formed a household whose policy reach extended from Stockholm housing reform to UN disarmament work. He died in 1987.

The name Gunnar comes from the Old Norse Gunnarr, combining gunnr, meaning battle, with arr, meaning warrior. He fought no wars but spent six decades pressing arguments against poverty, racial caste, and the arms race, an apt reading for a man whose writing was always combative.
