Gustav Mahler

Gustav Mahler was an Austrian late-Romantic composer, and one of the leading conductors of his generation.

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) was an Austrian composer and conductor whose nine completed numbered symphonies and great orchestral song cycles brought the late Romantic symphonic tradition to its furthest expansion. Born in Kalischt in Bohemia to a German-speaking Jewish family and raised in Iglau, he showed early gifts at the piano and entered the Vienna Conservatory at fifteen, studying with Julius Epstein and absorbing the music of Wagner, Bruckner, and Brahms in the same city.

He built his reputation as a conductor through a sequence of opera houses, beginning at provincial theaters in Bad Hall, Laibach, and Olmutz and rising to Kassel, Prague, Leipzig, Budapest, and Hamburg before securing the directorship of the Vienna Court Opera in 1897, a post he held for ten years. The Vienna years brought reforms to staging, casting, and orchestral discipline that shaped operatic practice well after his departure.

His compositions were largely written during summer breaks in lakeside composing huts at Steinbach, Maiernigg, and Toblach. The first four symphonies draw on the folk-poem collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn; the middle group, the Fifth through the Seventh, are purely instrumental; the Eighth, premiered in Munich in 1910, calls for vast vocal forces. The song-symphony Das Lied von der Erde and the Ninth Symphony belong to his last years, with the Tenth Symphony left unfinished at his death.

He led the New York Philharmonic from 1909 until illness forced his return to Vienna, where he died of bacterial endocarditis at fifty.

The given name Gustav is a Germanic form of an Old Swedish name combining Gautr, a Goth, with stafr, staff. He bore it through a life that joined the podium and the score.
