Hugo Chavez
Politician — born 1954
Hugo Chavez served as the President of Venezuela from 1999 until 2013.
Hugo Chávez was a Venezuelan politician and military officer who served as the 53rd President of Venezuela from February 1999 until his March 2013 death — a 14-year tenure that fundamentally restructured Venezuelan politics, economics, and foreign relations. He was born Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías on July 28, 1954, in Sabaneta, Barinas, Venezuela. He was raised primarily by his paternal grandmother in working-class circumstances. He entered the Venezuelan Military Academy in 1971 and graduated as an Army officer in 1975.
His political career began with his February 4, 1992 attempted coup against Venezuelan President Carlos Andrés Pérez — an attempt that failed within hours. Chávez was imprisoned for two years before being pardoned by President Rafael Caldera in 1994. The pardon allowed him to launch a political career, founding the Movimiento Quinta República (Fifth Republic Movement) party in 1997. He won the December 1998 presidential election with 56% of the vote and took office in February 1999.
His 14-year presidency was characterized by aggressive economic-policy reforms (large-scale nationalizations of Venezuela's oil, telecommunications, and electricity industries), substantial social-program expansion (the "Bolivarian Missions" — government-funded literacy, health, housing, and food programs — that significantly reduced Venezuelan extreme poverty across his first decade), and substantial foreign-policy realignment toward Cuba, Russia, China, and Iran (the "Pink Tide" of 2000s–2010s Latin American socialist governments was shaped by Chávez's leadership).
His tenure was also marked by political polarization — the April 2002 attempted coup against him (which restored him to power within 47 hours), the 2002–2003 Venezuelan oil-industry strike, and continuous concerns about democratic erosion and human-rights conditions. He won three subsequent presidential elections (2000, 2006, 2012) before being diagnosed with cancer in 2011. He died of cancer on March 5, 2013, at age 58, in Caracas. He was succeeded by his Vice President Nicolás Maduro, whose subsequent decade in power has been characterized by Venezuela's continuing political and economic crisis.
His name Hugo is from the Old Germanic Hugo, derived from hug meaning "thought" or "mind." Hugo has been continuously climbing in American naming since the 2000s.
