Jane Jacobs

Jane Jacobs was a well-known American-Canadian writer, journalist and activist.

Jane Jacobs was an American-Canadian journalist and urban theorist whose 1961 book The Death and Life of Great American Cities reframed twentieth-century thinking about how neighbourhoods, sidewalks, and street networks actually function. Born Jane Butzner in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1916, she moved to New York during the Depression and worked as a stenographer and freelance writer.

Her early articles for Vogue, Cue, and the Office of War Information described particular Manhattan industries and districts at street level. She joined Architectural Forum in 1952, and a 1958 Fortune assignment titled Downtown Is for People drew the attention of the Rockefeller Foundation, which funded the research that became The Death and Life of Great American Cities.

The book attacked the urban renewal orthodoxy of figures such as Robert Moses, defending mixed-use blocks, short streets, dense old buildings, and concentrated populations as the engines of safety and economic vitality. As a Greenwich Village resident she organised the successful campaign that defeated Moses's Lower Manhattan Expressway.

In 1968 she moved her family to Toronto in protest against the Vietnam War, where she helped stop the proposed Spadina Expressway and continued writing. Her later books include The Economy of Cities (1969), Cities and the Wealth of Nations (1984), and Dark Age Ahead (2004). She died in Toronto in April 2006 at eighty-nine.

The name Jane is a feminine name of English origin, a Middle English form of the French Jeanne, itself derived from the Hebrew Yochanan meaning "God is gracious." Long among the most common English given names, it suited the plain, unpretentious public voice she cultivated against architectural and academic jargon throughout her career.
