Jim Morrison

Rock Singer — born 1943

Jim Morrison was a legendary American rock singer.

Jim Morrison was an American singer, songwriter, and poet who fronted the rock band The Doors. With songs such as Light My Fire, Riders on the Storm, and The End, he became one of the most recognizable figures of the late 1960s counterculture.

James Douglas Morrison was born on December 8, 1943, in Melbourne, Florida, the son of George Stephen Morrison, a U.S. Navy officer, and Clara Clarke Morrison. The family moved frequently because of his father's military postings.

He attended Florida State University before transferring to UCLA's film school, where he met keyboardist Ray Manzarek on Venice Beach in 1965. They formed The Doors with guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore, taking the name from Aldous Huxley's book The Doors of Perception.

The band's self-titled 1967 debut produced the number-one single Light My Fire, and they released six studio albums together, including Strange Days, Waiting for the Sun, and L.A. Woman. Morrison also published volumes of poetry such as The Lords and the New Creatures. He died in Paris on July 3, 1971, at age 27.

Their name Jim derives from the Hebrew name Jacob, meaning supplanter, by way of James. Jim has been a common given name and nickname in the United States for generations.
