Jon Stewart
TV Show Host — born 1962
Jon Stewart is a television host and comedian best known for hosting ‘The Jon Stewart Show’.
Jon Stewart is an American comedian, satirist, TV host, and author whose 16-year tenure as host of Comedy Central's The Daily Show (1999–2015) made him one of the most-iconic American political-satire-and-news figures of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He was born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz on November 28, 1962, in New York City, into a Jewish-American family. The family relocated to Lawrenceville, New Jersey when he was a child. He attended the College of William & Mary (B.A. in psychology, 1984).
His stand-up comedy career began in 1986 at the New York City Bitter End comedy club. His 1993 MTV talk show The Jon Stewart Show ran for two seasons across 1993–1995. His 1999 Comedy Central hire as host of The Daily Show — replacing original host Craig Kilborn — transformed the Comedy Central program from a celebrity-news satire show into one of the American political-satire-and-news programs of the 2000s and 2010s.
His 16-year Daily Show tenure produced 19 Primetime Emmy Awards (16 wins for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series and 3 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series), two Peabody Awards, and substantial American influence on the 2000s and 2010s American political-and-media landscape. The Daily Show's correspondents under Stewart's tenure — including Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Steve Carell, Ed Helms, Samantha Bee, Larry Wilmore, Wyatt Cenac, Aasif Mandvi, and Jessica Williams — went on to launch major American comedy-and-talk-show careers.
His August 6, 2015 final episode as Daily Show host drew substantial American TV-press coverage. He returned to host The Daily Show for the 2024 American presidential election cycle (Mondays only, with rotating co-hosts on other weekday episodes) — beginning February 12, 2024 and continuing through the November 2024 election. He has been a substantial American activist for 9/11 first-responders' compensation and Vietnam War-era and Gulf War-era veterans' burn-pit health-care issues — work that produced the 2019 Never Forget the Heroes Act and the 2022 PACT Act. He has been married to former veterinary technician Tracey Lynn McShane since 2000, and the couple has two children.
His name Jon is the English short form of Jonathan or John. Jon has been continuously among the most-popular American boys' names for over a century.
