Joss Whedon
Director — born 1964
Joss Whedon is an illustrious American screenwriter, author, composer and a film and television producer.
Joss Whedon is an American screenwriter, director, and producer whose four-decade career has produced multiple defining American TV and film roles — particularly his 1997–2003 creation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and his 2012 lead direction of Marvel Studios's The Avengers. He was born Joseph Hill Whedon on June 23, 1964, in New York City, into a third-generation American TV-screenwriting family. His grandfather John Whedon was a screenwriter for The Donna Reed Show and The Andy Griffith Show, and his father Tom Whedon was a screenwriter for The Electric Company, The Golden Girls, and Benson.
His education at Wesleyan University (B.A. in Film Studies, 1987) launched his early-career path. His breakthrough came as a staff writer on the ABC TV sitcom Roseanne across 1989–1990. His 1992 first feature-film screenwriting credit on Fran Rubel Kuzui's Buffy the Vampire Slayer — though Whedon disclaimed the 1992 film as a misinterpretation of his original screenplay — launched his 1990s screenwriting career.
His 1997–2003 creation of the WB and UPN TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer — which ran 144 episodes across seven seasons — launched his late-1990s and 2000s American TV public profile. His 1999–2004 creation of the WB TV spinoff series Angel (110 episodes across five seasons) and his 2002 creation of the Fox TV series Firefly (14 episodes across one season) produced his early-2000s American genre-TV public profile.
His 2012 direction of Marvel Studios's The Avengers — the third-highest-grossing film at its 2012 release with $1.5 billion worldwide — launched his 2010s American superhero-genre film career. The 2015 sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron grossed $1.4 billion worldwide. His later biographical narrative across the late 2010s and early 2020s has been complicated by 2017 ex-wife Kai Cole's allegations of marital infidelity and 2020–2021 multiple Buffy, Angel, and Justice League cast-and-crew allegations of workplace verbal abuse.
His name Joss began as a personally-adopted nickname (originally an English diminutive of Joseph). Joss has been a rare but enduring American boys' name across the late 20th century.
