Keith Urban
Country Singer — born 1967
Keith Urban is a Grammy Award winning country music singer and guitarist.
Keith Urban is a New Zealand-born Australian-American country-music singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose three-decade music career has produced four Grammy Awards, 15 American Country Music Awards, and over 25 million records sold worldwide. He was born Keith Lionel Urban on October 26, 1967, in Whangarei, New Zealand, into an Australian-emigrant family. His father Robert Urban was a New Zealand-Australian convenience-store owner, and his mother Marienne Urban was a homemaker. The 1969 family return to Australia (when Keith was two) launched his early-career path in Caboolture, Queensland, Australia.
His 1990s Australian country-music career — across his 1991 first commercial Australian album Keith Urban (released by EMI Australia) and his 1992–1995 Australian country-music chart appearances — launched his early-career Australian country-music public profile. His 1992 relocation to Nashville, Tennessee, launched his American country-music breakthrough.
His 1999 first commercial American album Keith Urban — released by Capitol Records Nashville — sold over one million American copies and produced his American country-music breakthrough single "But for the Grace of God." His 2002 third commercial American album Golden Road sold over four million American copies and produced his single "Somebody Like You" (which became his first Billboard Hot Country Songs number-one single).
His subsequent commercial career has produced multiple American Billboard Hot Country Songs number-one singles across the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s — particularly the 2004 fourth commercial American album Be Here (which sold over four million copies and produced four consecutive Billboard Hot Country Songs number-one singles), the 2009 sixth commercial American album Defying Gravity, and the 2018 eighth commercial American album Graffiti U. His parallel American TV-personality career has produced his 2013–2018 coaching position on Fox's American Idol revival (the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th seasons of American Idol). He has been married to American actress Nicole Kidman since 2006, and the couple has two daughters.
His name Keith derives from the Old Scottish-Gaelic place-name meaning "forest" or "battle place." Keith has been continuously among the most-popular American boys' names since 1880.
