Kelly Rowland
Pop Singer — born 1981
Kelly Rowland is an American singer, actress, songwriter and television personality.
Kelly Rowland is an American singer, songwriter, and actress whose three-decade career — first as a member of Destiny's Child and then as an R&B solo artist — has made her one of the most-iconic American R&B performers of the late 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. She was born Kelendria Trene Rowland on February 11, 1981, in Atlanta, Georgia. She moved to Houston, Texas, at age seven, where she met Beyoncé Knowles in 1990 — beginning the friendship and musical collaboration that would lead to Destiny's Child.
The Destiny's Child group — initially as Girl's Tyme (1990–1993) and then as Destiny's Child from 1996 onwards — was originally a four-member group (Knowles, Rowland, LeToya Luckett, LaTavia Roberson), with the 2000 lineup change replacing Luckett and Roberson with Michelle Williams. The three-member Knowles-Rowland-Williams Destiny's Child commercial peak produced the 1999 single "Bills, Bills, Bills," the 2000 single "Say My Name," and the 2001 single "Survivor" — the group's Destiny's Child albums sold over 60 million copies worldwide before the 2002 hiatus.
Her 2002 solo debut album Simply Deep sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide and produced the single "Stole." The 2007 second solo album Ms. Kelly produced the singles "Like This" (featuring Eve) and "Ghetto." Her 2011 third solo album Here I Am produced the single "Motivation" (featuring Lil Wayne), which reached the Billboard R&B chart #1.
Beyond music, Rowland has been active in American TV. She served as a judge on UK's The X Factor (2011) and US's The X Factor (2013). She has appeared in films Freddy vs. Jason (2003), The Seat Filler (2004), and the 2025 Netflix thriller The Mothership. The 2005 Destiny's Child farewell tour and the 2013 reunion at the Beyoncé Super Bowl XLVII halftime show anchored the Destiny's Child legacy in American R&B history.
Her name Kelly is from the Old Irish Ó Ceallaigh meaning "descendant of Ceallach" (a clan name). Kelly has been continuously among the most-popular American gender-neutral names for decades.
