Khaled Mashal

Khaled Mashal is a famous Palestinian politician and leader of Islamist organization ‘Hamas’.

Khaled Mashal is a Palestinian political figure who chaired the Hamas Politburo from 1996 to 2017. Born in 1956 in the West Bank village of Silwad, he left for Kuwait as a child and later studied physics at Kuwait University, where he became active in Islamist student politics during the 1970s.

Mashal helped organise Hamas in its early years and rose to lead its political bureau after Israel killed his predecessor Yahya Ayyash. In September 1997 Israeli Mossad agents poisoned him on a street in Amman, and Jordan's King Hussein forced Israel to provide an antidote in exchange for releasing the captured operatives, an episode that turned Mashal into an internationally recognised figure.

From bases in Damascus and later Doha, he directed Hamas through the Second Intifada, the 2006 Palestinian elections that gave the movement a parliamentary majority, and the 2008–2009 and 2014 Gaza wars. He oversaw the 2011 prisoner exchange that freed more than a thousand Palestinians for the captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Term limits ended his chairmanship in 2017, when Ismail Haniyeh succeeded him. Mashal subsequently led Hamas's diaspora office and remained a public spokesman for the movement, including during the war that began in October 2023. He is regarded by supporters as a survivor of Israeli assassination and by critics as a hardline architect of armed resistance.

The name Khaled comes from the Arabic root khalada, meaning eternal or everlasting, and was borne by the seventh-century general Khalid ibn al-Walid. He carries it as a masculine given name common across the Arab world, often chosen for its association with lasting honour and remembrance.
