Kofi Annan

Kofi Annan was the seventh secretary general of the United Nations.

Kofi Annan was a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006 and shared the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize with the organisation. Born in 1938 in Kumasi to a family of Fante and Ashanti chiefs, he studied economics at Macalester College in Minnesota and management at MIT.

Annan joined the World Health Organization in 1962 and spent most of his career inside the United Nations system, holding posts in budget, personnel, and refugee work before becoming Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping in 1993. He oversaw operations during the Rwandan genocide and the Bosnian war, periods later examined in critical internal reports that he himself commissioned.

As Secretary-General he reorganised the UN Secretariat, launched the Millennium Development Goals in 2000, and championed the doctrine of the responsibility to protect, adopted at the 2005 World Summit. He also faced the Oil-for-Food investigation involving Iraq, which cleared him personally of wrongdoing but criticised UN management.

After leaving office he founded the Kofi Annan Foundation, mediated in the 2007–2008 Kenyan post-election crisis, and led the Joint Special Envoy mission on Syria in 2012 before resigning in frustration. He chaired the Elders, a group of senior statesmen convened by Nelson Mandela, until his death in Bern in 2018.
