Lauryn Hill

R&B Singer — born 1975

Lauryn Hill is a famous hip-hop female artist from America who is into singing, songwriting, rapping, production and acting.

Lauryn Hill is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, and producer whose two-decade career — first as a member of hip-hop group the Fugees and then as one of the most-iconic American R&B-and-hip-hop solo artists of the late 1990s — has produced one of the most-iconic American R&B-and-hip-hop bodies of work of her generation. She was born Lauryn Noelle Hill on May 26, 1975, in East Orange, New Jersey. She started performing as a child, and her 1990 debut album Sister with the local New Jersey group Tranzlator Crew (later renamed the Fugees) launched her professional career at age 15.

The Fugees lineup of Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras Michel released two albums — the 1994 Blunted on Reality and the 1996 The Score. The The Score sold over 18 million copies worldwide and produced the single "Killing Me Softly" — which reached the Billboard Hot 100 top 5 and won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. The Fugees-period commercial peak made Hill one of the American hip-hop figures of the mid-1990s.

Her 1998 solo debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill sold over 19 million copies worldwide and won five Grammy Awards at the 1999 ceremony — including Album of the Year (making Hill the first hip-hop artist ever to win Album of the Year). The album has been continuously cited as one of the American R&B-and-hip-hop albums of the late 1990s. The singles "Doo Wop (That Thing)," "Ex-Factor," and "To Zion" established her solo career.

Her post-1998 career has been complicated by her continuous reluctance to release new studio material. The 2002 acoustic album MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 was her last full studio album — over 22 years ago at this writing. She has continued to tour selectively and has appeared at Fugees-reunion concerts in 2005 and 2021. Her 2013 federal tax-evasion conviction (for which she served three months in federal prison) shaped her 2010s public image.

Her name Lauryn is the modern American spelling variant of Lauren (the feminine of Lawrence, from the Latin Laurentius). Lauryn has been continuously among the most-popular American girls' names for decades.
