Lee Kuan Yew
Politician — born 1923
Lee Kuan Yew was the first Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore.
Lee Kuan Yew was a Singaporean lawyer and politician who served as the founding Prime Minister of Singapore from June 1959 (when Singapore was a self-governing British colony) to November 1990 — the 31-year tenure that transformed Singapore from a third-world British colonial trading port into one of the richest nations per capita in the world. He was born Lee Kuan Yew on September 16, 1923, in Kampong Java, British Singapore, into a ethnic-Chinese-Singaporean family. His maternal grandfather was a wealthy rubber-trade businessman.
His education was interrupted by the 1942–1945 Japanese occupation of Singapore — during which he worked as an transcriber for the Japanese Hodobu (Information Department) and survived the Japanese Sook Ching massacre (the systematic killing of approximately 50,000 ethnic-Chinese Singapore residents). After the 1945 Japanese surrender, he attended Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge (Bachelor of Laws, 1949), and was called to the English Bar in 1950.
His political career began with his 1954 founding of the People's Action Party (PAP) in Singapore. The 1959 PAP general-election landslide victory made Lee the Prime Minister of self-governing Singapore at age 35. The 1963 merger with Malaysia and the 1965 expulsion from Malaysia produced the August 9, 1965 Singapore independence — at which point Lee wept publicly on television, calling the separation "a moment of anguish."
His 25-year independence-era prime-ministership produced the transformation of Singapore. The Lee Kuan Yew governance philosophy — combining free-market economics with strict social discipline, continuous public-housing construction (the Housing Development Board has constructed over 1.1 million Singapore HDB flats), and substantial restrictions on political opposition — has been continuously cited as one of the 20th-century governance models. He stepped down as Prime Minister in November 1990 but continued in senior cabinet positions (Senior Minister, then Minister Mentor) until 2011. He died on March 23, 2015, at age 91, in Singapore. His son Lee Hsien Loong served as Singapore Prime Minister from 2004 to 2024.
His name Lee is from the Old English leah meaning "clearing" or "meadow" — and is also a common Chinese surname (李) that historically corresponds to multiple Chinese-language characters. Lee has been continuously among the most-popular American gender-neutral names for decades.
