Leonard Bernstein
Composer — born 1918
Leonard Bernstein was one of the most influential classical musicians of his age, very few musicians can boast of a career like Leonard Bernstein.
Leonard Bernstein was an American conductor, composer, and pianist whose six-decade career — particularly his 11-year tenure as the Music Director of the New York Philharmonic (1958–1969) — made him one of the figures of 20th-century American classical music. He was born Louis Bernstein on August 25, 1918, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, into an Jewish-American immigrant family. He legally changed his given name to Leonard at age 16. He attended Harvard University (B.A. in music, 1939) and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
His 1943 New York Philharmonic debut — at age 25, conducting on 12 hours' notice as a last-minute replacement for the ill Bruno Walter — became one of the American classical-music breakthroughs of the 20th century. The November 14, 1943 Carnegie Hall performance was broadcast on CBS Radio and established Bernstein as one of the young American conductors of his generation.
His compositional career produced multiple American classical-and-Broadway works. His 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story (with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents) — the Romeo-and-Juliet adaptation set in 1950s Manhattan immigrant gangs — has been continuously cited as one of the American musicals of the 20th century. His 1956 operetta Candide (based on Voltaire) and his 1971 Mass further established his compositional range.
His 1958–1969 New York Philharmonic Music Director tenure — and the accompanying Young People's Concerts (broadcast on CBS-TV from 1958 to 1972) — shaped American classical-music television education for an generation of viewers. His 1989 conducting of the Berlin Wall demolition concert on Christmas Day 1989 — performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the word "Joy" replaced by "Freedom" — was one of the moments of his late career. He died on October 14, 1990, at age 72, in New York City. The 2023 Bradley Cooper film Maestro brought his life to a new American generation.
His name Leonard is from the Old Germanic Leonhard, composed of leo (lion) and hard (brave) — yielding "brave as a lion." Leonard has been continuously among the most-popular American boys' names for over a century.
