Leonardo da Vinci

Painter — born 1452

Leonardo da Vinci was a legendary Florentine painter, polymath, sculptor, architect and musician.

Leonardo da Vinci was the Italian Renaissance polymath whose work in painting, drawing, anatomy, engineering, architecture, geology, and natural science made him one of the most-influential figures in Western intellectual history. He was born Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci on April 15, 1452, in the small Tuscan hill town of Vinci, near Florence — the illegitimate son of a Florentine notary and a peasant woman. He was apprenticed at age 14 to the prominent Florentine artist Andrea del Verrocchio.

Leonardo's painting output was unusually small — fewer than 20 paintings survive, and several are unfinished — but the surviving works include three of the most-famous paintings in Western art history: The Last Supper (1495–1498, the mural in Milan's Santa Maria delle Grazie monastery), the Mona Lisa (c. 1503–1519, now in the Louvre and the most-visited painting in the world), and Vitruvian Man (c. 1490, the anatomical drawing of a man inscribed in a circle and square that has become one of the most-reproduced images in Western culture).

His notebook output was vast and largely unpublished during his lifetime — over 7,200 pages of handwritten notes (in mirror-image left-handed script) and drawings covering anatomy (including his dissection-based human-anatomy studies that anticipated medical illustration by centuries), engineering (designs for flying machines, parachutes, armored vehicles, and water systems), botany, geology, and military fortification. Many of his ideas anticipated technologies that would not be realized for hundreds of years.

He worked across several Italian and French courts: the Medicis in Florence, the Sforza in Milan, Cesare Borgia in central Italy, and finally King Francis I of France, who provided him with the manor house Clos Lucé near the royal Château d'Amboise. He died on May 2, 1519, at age 67, at Clos Lucé. The 500th anniversary of his death in 2019 prompted a year-long series of major international exhibitions.

His name Leonardo is from the Old Germanic Leonhard, composed of leo (lion) and hard (brave, hardy) — yielding "brave as a lion." Leonardo has been continuously climbing in American naming since the 2010s, anchored by both Leonardo da Vinci's classical pedigree and Leonardo DiCaprio's contemporary Hollywood visibility.
