Lester B. Pearson

Lester B. Pearson was the 14th Prime Minister of Canada.

Lester Bowles Pearson, known to Canadians as "Mike," served as the 14th Prime Minister of Canada from 1963 to 1968 and remains one of the most consequential diplomats his country has produced. Born in Newtonbrook, Ontario in 1897, he was the son of a Methodist minister and grew up moving between southern Ontario parsonages before enlisting as a teenager during the First World War.

After studies at the University of Toronto and Oxford, Pearson joined the Canadian Department of External Affairs in 1928. He rose through the ranks during the Second World War, serving in London and Washington, and by 1945 was deeply involved in drafting the United Nations Charter at San Francisco. As Secretary of State for External Affairs from 1948, he helped shape NATO and represented Canada through the early Cold War.

His most celebrated moment came during the 1956 Suez Crisis, when he proposed the United Nations Emergency Force as a buffer between Egyptian and Anglo-French-Israeli forces. The plan was adopted, peacekeeping as a modern practice was effectively born, and Pearson received the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize for the achievement.

Becoming Liberal Party leader in 1958, he led two minority governments after winning the 1963 election. Despite never holding a majority, his administration introduced universal Medicare, the Canada Pension Plan, the Canada Student Loans programme, a 40-hour work week, and the Maple Leaf flag of 1965. He retired in 1968 and died of cancer in Ottawa in 1972.

The given name Lester is English in origin, derived from the city of Leicester, whose Old English form Ligora-ceaster combined a river name with the Roman-derived element ceaster meaning "camp" or "fortress." It transferred from surname to forename in the nineteenth century, and Pearson carried it through the highest offices of his nation.
