Mario Andretti

Race Car Driver — born 1940

Mario Andretti is a retired American professional race car driver, who has won numerous racing titles and laurels.

Mario Andretti is an Italian-American former racing driver born February 28, 1940, in Montona, Istria, then part of Italy and now in Croatia. After World War II, his family spent seven years in a refugee camp in Lucca before emigrating to Nazareth, Pennsylvania, in 1955. He and his twin brother Aldo began racing modified stock cars on local dirt tracks soon after.

Andretti is one of only two drivers to win races in Formula One, IndyCar, the World Sportscar Championship, and NASCAR. He won the Indianapolis 500 in 1969, the Daytona 500 in 1967, the Formula One World Championship in 1978 with Lotus, and the IndyCar national championship four times (1965, 1966, 1969, and 1984). His 111 IndyCar victories include 52 wins in the United States Auto Club series.

His Formula One title came at the wheel of the ground-effect Lotus 79 designed by Colin Chapman, a car that dominated the 1978 season. He scored his first F1 victory at the 1971 South African Grand Prix and his last at the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix. He was named Driver of the Year by the Associated Press in three different decades, the only racer to do so.

Andretti retired from full-time competition in 1994. His son Michael, grandson Marco, and nephew John all became professional racing drivers, and the family name remains active in IndyCar through Andretti Global, the team founded by Michael.

The name Mario is the Italian and Spanish form of the Latin Marius, a Roman family name possibly derived from Mars, the Roman god of war, or from the Latin mas meaning "male."
