Martha Stewart
Entrepreneur — born 1941
Martha Stewart is a successful American business women, TV host and author of many books.
Martha Stewart is an American businesswoman, TV personality, and lifestyle author whose four-decade career has built one of the most-iconic American lifestyle-and-entertainment empires of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. She was born Martha Helen Kostyra on August 3, 1941, in Jersey City, New Jersey, into a Polish-American working-class family — the second of six children of schoolteacher and pharmaceutical-salesman parents. She attended Barnard College on a partial scholarship, working as a fashion model to fund her education.
Her early career included 1965–1973 stockbroker work on Wall Street and 1976 founding of the Westport, Connecticut catering business The Uncatered Affair. Her catering work — particularly the Manhattan-area entertaining-style market — launched her 1982 publishing breakthrough with Entertaining (her first cookbook, published by Crown Publishing). The book sold over 600,000 copies and established her American lifestyle-publishing brand.
Her 1990 launch of Martha Stewart Living magazine — through her publishing company Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (founded 1991) — became one of the American women's-lifestyle publishing successes of the 1990s. The 1993 launch of the Martha Stewart Living TV show (running through 2004) expanded her American TV-cooking-and-lifestyle visibility.
Her career was complicated by the 2003 federal indictment for securities fraud and obstruction of justice (related to her December 2001 sale of ImClone Systems stock). She was convicted on four counts in March 2004 and served five months in federal prison (October 2004 to March 2005) at the Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia. She has continued to operate her lifestyle-and-publishing business empire — including the 2024 Netflix documentary Martha — and has continued to be a recurring American TV personality into her eighties.
Her name Martha is from the Aramaic Marta meaning "lady" or "mistress." Martha has been continuously among the most-popular American girls' names for over a century.
