Martin McDonagh

Martin McDonagh is a British-Irish playwright, screenwriter and film director.

Martin Faranan McDonagh was born on March 26, 1970, in Camberwell, London, to Irish parents — a construction worker from Galway and a homemaker from Sligo. He grew up in working-class south London with his older brother John Michael, also a filmmaker, and left school at sixteen, supporting himself with welfare benefits and shop jobs while writing radio plays for the BBC.

His stage breakthrough came in 1996 when London's Royal Court premiered The Beauty Queen of Leenane, the first installment of his Leenane Trilogy set in rural Connemara, followed by A Skull in Connemara and The Lonesome West. The Aran Islands Trilogy added The Cripple of Inishmaan and The Lieutenant of Inishmore; The Pillowman (2003), A Behanding in Spokane (2010), Hangmen (2015), and A Very Very Very Dark Matter (2018) followed on West End and Broadway stages. The Beauty Queen of Leenane won four Tony Awards in its 1998 Broadway run.

McDonagh moved into film with the short Six Shooter, which won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. His features In Bruges (2008), Seven Psychopaths (2012), Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017), and The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) earned him Oscar nominations for original screenplay each time and a win in that category for Three Billboards; the latter also took two acting Oscars and the BAFTA for Best Film. The Banshees of Inisherin received nine Academy Award nominations.

He has been in a long-term relationship with British actress and writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge since 2018 and continues to base his work between London and the west of Ireland.

The name Martin derives from the Latin Martinus, formed from Mars, the Roman god of war, and carries a sense of warlike or of Mars. A masculine name worn by saints, soldiers, and storytellers, it fits a writer whose plays and films circle violence with a moralist's attention.
